// VILLAWOOD IMMIGRATION DETENTION CENTRE

‘Inconspicuous Terrain’

The proposal addresses the government’s current plans to increase the capacity of the facility. The studio challenges the current security paradigm of detention cells surrounded by a clear perimeter and chain wire.

The Studio  proposes that the new project could contain all the program in the 1.7km long boundary of the centre. The detention centre is the first point of contact for many asylum seekers with Australia and Australians.

What if a building could accommodate change?

Enabling the site to appear at times on & off the grid.

The proposal explores the notion of an inconspicuous site?

The key concepts of Camouflage, The Uncanny are architecturally interrogated.

It is intended that the architecture strategically operates through a on-{off} the grid logic whereby the buildings can completely merge and camouflage within its immediate environment becoming entirely inconspicuous.

The Proposal is about the ‘unnerving condition’ of the current state of the Villawood detention centre which is explored through this sense of the uncanny.
